Latest Stats as at 18/10/2012 ============================= These figures cover the 15-day period 1/10/2012 to 15/10/2012. The Safari browser remains ahead of Internet Explorer. Operating System Market Share ============================== For the period 1st to 15th of October, these percentage figures are based on visits, with earlier figures in brackets:- Windows-7 35.2 (33.8, 34.4, 32.4, 31.7, 32.5) XP 18.8 (18.2, 19.8, 23.2, 25.0, 23.3, 21.1) Vista 5.2 (5.2, 5.0, 5.1, 4.7, 5.4, 5.7, 6.4) Pre-XP Windows 0.8 (0.7, 0.6, 1.0, 0.9, 0.9) Mac 12.8 (12.4, 12.6, 11.3, 11.9, 12.4, 12.0) iPhone etc 19.9 (21.1, 19.7, 19.2, 18.5, 18.2) Android 4.2 (5.0, 3.9, 4.1, 3.5, 3.7, 4.2, 3.5) Other Mobiles 2.5 (2.8, 3.2, 3.0, 2.9, 2.7, 3.1) Linux 0.7 (0.7, 0.7, 0.7, 0.8, 0.8, 0.9, 0.8) The mobile results are down slightly. This fortnight there seems to be less looking at pictures and more surfing the net and with larger screens presumably. Unfortunately the log files do not provide a breakup of device type between laptop, tablet, smartphone and desktop PC. Also the log files do not record screen resolution, but companies who track this are reporting that 1024 x 768, which has been the most common resolution for many years, has finally given way to its widescreen equivalent 1366 x 768. Many people have much higher resolutions of course; this is just the most common case out of many. The average desktop monitor size is now given as 21 inches. The total sample size above was 19592. Browser Breakup =============== Percentages of visits for the period 1st to 15th October 2012:- IE 27.9 (28.0, 30.0, 31.5, 33.3, 31.3, 28.4) Safari 29.2 (30.2, 29.2, 27.7, 27.6, 27.0, 30.2) Chrome 26.4 (24.0, 23.0, 23.7, 21.6, 22.8) Firefox 12.7 (13.7, 13.7, 13.2, 13.7, 15.0) Opera 2.3 (2.5, 2.3, 2.1, 2.1, 2.3, 2.2, 2.3) All Others 1.5 (1.6, 1.8, 1.8, 1.7, 1.6, 1.9) Safari remains ahead of Internet Explorer. The most popular individual browser is Chrome 22, well ahead of Safari 5 & 6 and Internet Explorer 8 & 9. Automatic upgrading is going quite well but there are plenty of stragglers too. The results show everything from Chrome 3 to Chrome 24 and from Firefox 1 to Firefox 18, with a lot of users still stuck on Firefox 3, especially Firefox 3.6. The sample size was 19658 visits by humans. Search Engines Share ==================== Percentage breakup of visits coming via search engines for October 1st to 15th, 2012:- Google 90.9 (90.4, 90.5, 90.6, 88.7, 88.4, 89.6) Yahoo 3.4 (4.2, 4.0, 3.5, 4.7, 4.6, 4.2, 3.7, 3.4) Bing 2.8 (2.5, 2.9, 2.7, 3.2, 3.3, 2.9, 3.0, 2.8) All others 2.9 (3.0, 2.7, 3.3, 3.3, 3.6, 3.3, 3.1) The total number of searches in this sample was 13636, including 2670 of 12392 searches (23%) via Google where the search string was "not provided" allegedly for privacy reasons. Yahoo and Bing are not playing this "privacy" game at all, not a single instance ever. The Safari browser remains low with only 4% "not provided". When it comes to Search Engine News, most of the on-line newsletters are desperate for something to write about, otherwise they are all reduced to "Google Watchers". Blekko is often in the news with some new feature; their latest is that they have banned outright all the poor quality articles surrounded by mindless advertisements from content-server-farms. Blekko has even named the 20 worst offenders, whilst Google is quietly pushing such search results down into the mud. There are howls of protest about freedom of speech and right to know of course, but once you have seen a few of these articles you might conclude they are no loss to the Internet. =============================== ============================
