Latest Stats as at 8/9/2012 ============================ These figures cover the 16-day period 16/8/2012 to 31/8/2012. Hits and visits are up. The Olympic Games, the City-2-Surf and the Fifties Fair are over and spring is here. Operating System Market Share ============================== For the period 16th to 31st of August, these percentage figures are based on visits, with earlier figures in brackets:- Windows-7 32.4 (31.7, 32.5, 30.5, 32.6, 33.0) XP 23.2 (25.0, 23.3, 21.1, 22.3, 23.0, 26.2) Vista 5.1 (4.7, 5.4, 5.7, 6.4, 6.8, 6.6, 6.6) Pre-XP Windows 1.0 (0.9, 0.9, 1.0, 0.9, 1.0) Mac 11.3 (11.9, 12.4, 12.0, 12.3, 12.4, 11.4) iPhone etc 19.2 (18.5, 18.2, 21.4, 18.1, 17.2) Android 4.1 (3.5, 3.7, 4.2, 3.5, 3.1, 2.9, 3.3) Other Mobiles 3.0 (2.9, 2.7, 3.1, 2.9, 3.0, 2.7) Linux 0.7 (0.8, 0.8, 0.9, 0.8, 0.5, 0.8, 0.8) Within the "iPhone etc" category, the breakup is roughly 58% iPad, 39% iPhone and 3% iPod. Whilst all the journos write about the next iPhone-5, it's actually the iPad that is being used to surf the net. Last week in Bondi Junction I watched as a mother wheeled a child in a stroller off the bus. All the while the toddler was oblivious, engrossed in an iPad. As I said to the bus driver: "I didn't have an iPad when I was in my stroller". Within the "Other Mobiles" category, the main player is still Blackberry followed by Java phones followed by Nokia/Symbian. As noted previously, these visits reflect previous sales not today's sales. The total sample size above was 19235. Browser Breakup =============== Percentages of visits for the period 16th to 31st August 2012:- IE 31.5 (33.3, 31.3, 28.4, 31.0, 32.0, 36.7) Safari 27.7 (27.6, 27.0, 30.2, 27.3, 26.4, 23.7) Chrome 23.7 (21.6, 22.8, 23.1, 22.5, 22.3, 21.2) Firefox 13.2 (13.7, 15.0, 14.2, 15.4, 15.5, 14.5) Opera 2.1 (2.1, 2.3, 2.2, 2.3, 2.2, 2.3, 1.9) All Others 1.8 (1.7, 1.6, 1.9, 1.7, 1.5, 1.6) This is the highest Chrome result ever recorded, and the lowest for Firefox since this analysis began in 2008. Let's not leave out Internet Explorer, four years ago it was around 70%. The sample size was 19322 visits by humans. Search Engines Share ==================== Percentage breakup of visits coming via search engines for August 16th to 31st, 2012:- Google 90.6 (88.7, 88.4, 89.6, 90.3, 90.7, 90.8) Yahoo 3.5 (4.7, 4.6, 4.2, 3.7, 3.4, 3.0, 3.1, 3.5) Bing 2.7 (3.2, 3.3, 2.9, 3.0, 2.8, 2.9, 3.6, 3.5) All others 3.3 (3.3, 3.6, 3.3, 3.1, 3.1, 3.4, 4.8) Good heavens. Google has pole-vaulted back over 90%. The total number of searches in the sample was 12843, including 1621 out of 11630 searches via Google where the search string was "not provided" allegedly for privacy reasons. This "not provided" issue has huge ramifications for the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) industry; basically they are doomed. The industry has created its own demise by analysing search strings against IP addresses, which comes quite close to identifying households and individuals. Webmasters such as myself are being excluded from analysing why people come to our own web pages. Unless I use Google Analytics of course. From a browser point of view, I am seeing "not provided" via Firefox 48%, Chrome 29%, IE 14%, Opera 10% and Safari 1%. Across English speaking countries, it's Australia 19%, Canada 18%, USA 16%, New Zealand 16% and UK 11%. Unless overturned by a court, this lack of search string information can only get worse. =============================== ============================
