Latest Stats as at 18/8/2012 ============================ These figures cover the 16-day period 1/8/2012 to 15/8/2012. Not a lot to report about market share, but a lot of activity on the net what with the Olympic Games, the City to Surf (now called the City2Surf by its promoters), and the annual Fifties Fair to be held on 25th August. See more details below. Operating System Market Share ============================== For the period 1st to 15th of August, these percentage figures are based on visits, with earlier figures in brackets:- Windows-7 31.7 (32.5, 30.5, 32.6, 33.0, 32.9, 32.7) XP 25.0 (23.3, 21.1, 22.3, 23.0, 26.2, 24.6, 25.0) Vista 4.7 (5.4, 5.7, 6.4, 6.8, 6.6, 6.6, 6.4, 7.7) Pre-XP Windows 0.9 (0.9, 1.0, 0.9, 1.0, 1.0, 0.8) Mac 11.9 (12.4, 12.0, 12.3, 12.4, 11.4, 12.1, 11.4) iPhone etc 18.5 (18.2, 21.4, 18.1, 17.2, 15.5, 16.0) Android 3.5 (3.7, 4.2, 3.5, 3.1, 2.9, 3.3, 3.0) Other Mobiles 2.9 (2.7, 3.1, 2.9, 3.0, 2.7, 2.9) Linux 0.8 (0.8, 0.9, 0.8, 0.5, 0.8, 0.8, 0.6) In the "iPhone etc" figure, iPads are now way ahead of iPhones. Also note that iPads seem to be used differently from ordinary PC's - far more of the visits are just to view a single picture. The Blackberry smartphones are holding their share better than Nokia/Symbian. But visits are not current sales. Both are being outsold by Android models. The total sample size above was 17078. Browser Breakup =============== Percentages of visits for the period 1st to 15th August 2012:- IE 33.3 (31.3, 28.4, 31.0, 32.0, 36.7, 35.4, 36.2) Safari 27.6 (27.0, 30.2, 27.3, 26.4, 23.7, 24.8, 24.1) Chrome 21.6 (22.8, 23.1, 22.5, 22.3, 21.2, 21.1, 20.7) FF 13.7 (15.0, 14.2, 15.4, 15.5, 14.5, 15.1, 15.6) Opera 2.1 (2.3, 2.2, 2.3, 2.2, 2.3, 1.9, 1.9, 2.0) All Others 1.7 (1.6, 1.9, 1.7, 1.5, 1.6, 1.8, 1.4) God help us. I am now seeing the early downloaders for Chrome 22 and Firefox 21. Someone even claims to have Chrome 23. Are they providing new features or fixing security flaws?? The sample size was 17171 visits by humans. Search Engines Share ==================== Percentage breakup of visits coming via search engines for August 1st to 15th, 2012:- Google 88.7 (88.4, 89.6, 90.3, 90.7, 90.8, 88.6, 89.0) Yahoo 4.7 (4.6, 4.2, 3.7, 3.4, 3.0, 3.1, 3.5, 3.3, 3.4) Bing 3.2 (3.3, 2.9, 3.0, 2.8, 2.9, 3.6, 3.5, 3.2, 3.8) All others 3.3 (3.6, 3.3, 3.1, 3.1, 3.4, 4.8, 3.9, 3.3) This week a slight rise for Google. A reason explaining some of the increases for Yahoo has been found. Buried deep in the Bondi Beach Home Page are pictures taken at the Bondi Beach volleyball stadium back in the year 2000. These old pictures are hard to find in Google Images, but appear on the first page or so for Yahoo and Bing, especially at the USA web sites, when you search for "olympic beach volleyball". An analysis of searches about the Olympics with the visit coming from the USA gave 4 visits via Google, 16 via Bing and 65 via Yahoo. In the same study Australia registered 9 visits via Google and nothing else. The total number of searches in the sample was 10769. This includes 1621 "not provided" searches via Google. ======================================================== How transient is the web? In a nutshell, very. The moment an event finishes, searches for the topic just stop dead. It must be a nightmare for marketers trying to keep the interest going, and it tells you that the long term benefits of the London Olympic Games may be close to zero, just like they were for Sydney. So here are some figures for visits, split into eight day periods, with four figures for July and three for August:- Olympic Games (28th July to 12th August) July: 14, 25, 20, 93 August 101, 57, 4 (estimated) City to Surf (held Sunday 12th August) July: 4, 10, 6, 4 August: 19, 66, 4 (estimated) Rockabilly (Fifties Fair at the Rose Seidler House on 25/8) July: 26, 45, 45, 39 August: 48, 66, 60 (estimated) The daily figures have shown that visits for the Olympic Games and the City to Surf stopped dead the moment the event was over. Visits about "olympic beach volleyball" fell once the medal was decided on the 9th August, three days before the closing ceremony. It is also clear that, in late July, the Olympic Games suppressed interest in the City to Surf race until the very last minute. Meanwhile, as you might expect, Rockabilly lives in its own world. ================================ ===============================
