Latest Stats as at 3/8/2013 ============================= These figures cover the 16 day period 16/7/2013 to 31/7/2013. This 16 day period includes 4 weekend days and 12 weekdays, giving a slight bias expected towards desktops and laptops. If you read the computer press and web sites, it's all doom and gloom. Apple's end is in sight, Microsoft is struggling etc etc. The reality is a huge swing to smartphones and tablets. Apple products are way ahead of all Android makers combined. A closer inspection of individual visits shows that the serious visits to web sites are still being made from desktop and laptop computers; smartphones and tablets are used for sharing pictures and tweeting etc etc. I see many short visits from tablets and smartphones where only a single picture is viewed. Some web analysts don't even count the viewing of just one picture as a "visit" (see Wikipedia article on Web Analytics). The real trend is the massive quantity of advertising on the web compared with say three years ago. Try running your browser with AdBlock switched off for an hour - your screen will come alive with flashing and scrolling adverts, especially chosen to match your lifestyle. Yesterday it was call girls available now when looking at a site for dogs that need new homes. The general public hates Windows 8. The WinPhone is mainly on Nokia phones (Australia and England), and it's going very poorly in the USA. Android has measured over 10% for the first time. Desktops/Laptops 58% and Mobiles/Tablets 42%. The total sample size above was 24678. Browser Breakup =============== Percentages of visits for the period 16th to 31st July 2013:- Safari 34.8 (36.5, 34.1, 33.3, 31.9, 32.9, 34.0) Chrome 33.3 (33.5, 32.9, 33.2, 33.3, 31.7, 31.1) IE 17.0 (16.4, 17.3, 18.2, 20.1, 21.4, 20.8, 19.1) Firefox 8.8 (9.0, 10.5, 10.5, 10.1, 9.7, 9.8, 10.4) Opera 2.0 (1.9, 2.1, 1.8, 1.9, 1.8, 1.6, 2.0, 1.7) All Others 4.0 (2.7, 3.2, 3.0, 2.6, 2.6, 2.7, 3.4) Safari and Chrome are dominant, having displaced the previous favourites IE and Firefox. There are hundreds of posts on web forums saying Firefox is unstable and crashes all the time; this is true and I have changed to mostly using Chrome even though Firefox is more enjoyable to use. The sample size was 24801 visits by humans. Search Engines Share ==================== Percentage breakup of visits coming via search engines for July 16th to 31st, 2013:- Google 87.6 (87.3, 87.8, 88.6, 88.1, 86.9, 86.1, 87.4, 87.9) Bing 6.5 (6.2, 6.5, 5.7, 6.6, 7.2, 7.4, 6.8, 6.5, 6.3, 5.4) Yahoo 3.8 (4.4, 3.7, 3.4, 3.1, 3.4, 3.6, 3.1, 3.3, 3.6, 3.8) All others 2.1 (2.1, 1.9, 2.2, 2.2, 2.5, 2.9, 2.8, 2.3, 2.8) The share for 'Bing + Yahoo' remains over 10%. The market share for Bing during office hours in Australia is higher than expected. Clearly new computers are being installed with Bing as the default search engine. Yahoo mail is still a disaster although one annoying problem has been fixed. Their search engine does not deserve a market share. The total number of searches in this sample was 14693, including 6460 of 12868 searches (just over 50%) via Google where the search string was suppressed allegedly for privacy reasons. =============================== ============================
