Latest Stats as at 20/6/2011. ============================= These figures cover the 15-day period 1/6/2011 to 15/6/2011. ================================ ============================ Introduction ============ Two annoying trends: (a) The testing by Google has continued unabated, with hits from robots claiming to be the Chrome browser (version 9) running on Linux. (b) The first cut of these figures showed the usage of pre-XP versions of Windows had suddenly shot up to 2.9% from 2.0%, agter three years of gradual decline. The cause is a handful of IP addresses making large numbers of visits using all the old versions of Windows (even Windows 95 and Windows 3.1) in their browser string. If these rubbish visits are counted, then the results for all the other operating systems are too low, especially for Windows-7 and Windows XP. These spurious visits are especially annoying when you are trying to measure something already down in the mud, like the percentage of Android. Hence all hits related to the above trends are deleted, followed by a few large surges of traffic to pictures and continual wacky requests from hackers, and one-hit visits where the only file requested is favicon.ico. Next there is a surfer who reads the same .pdf file about 50 times a week and finally my own visits because my visits from a Linux netbook bump up the Linux result. Here's hoping the end result is nearer the truth. Operating System Market Share ============================== For the period 1st to 15th June 2011, these percentage figures are based on visits, with earlier figures in brackets:- XP 35.6 (37.4, 37.3, 37.4, 39.2, 40.0, 38.9, 39.9, 39.3) Windows-7 28.0 (28.2, 26.4, 25.8, 26.9, 25.7, 24.8, 23.0) Vista 12.1 (12.1, 12.4, 13.6, 13.2, 13.4, 13.6, 13.9, 15.5) Other Windows 1.8 (2.0, 1.7, 1.9, 1.7, 1.7, 1.6, 1.8, 1.9) Mac 11.1 (10.3, 11.5, 11.1, 10.4, 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.2) iPhone etc 5.6 (4.9, 5.5, 5.5, 4.8, 5.1, 5.5, 5.4, 5.9, 6.3) Android 1.4 (1.1, 1.1, 1.0, 0.8, 0.8, earlier in Other Mobiles) Other Mobiles 3.3 (3.0, 3.0, 2.9, 2.2, 2.3, 4.1, 4.4, 4.1) Linux 1.1 (1.0, 1.0, 0.8, 0.8, 0.6, 0.8, 0.9, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9) Testing by Google running flavour of Linux and Chrome as the browser with an add-in called Google Web Preview is not included above. However, once the new Chrome Operating System is released, we might have a new player. It's a particularly annoying case from Google where their robot has an agent string indicating it is a normal computer. But, as Gerry Patterson from Melbourne has demonstrated, all the origin IP addresses belong to Google, so that settles it. As said previously, watch the press for articles on the Chrome O/S and the Chrome browser, both from Google. The Chrome O/S is a flavour of Linux developed by Google but the open source code is released as the Chromium operating system. Confusing, eh? As explained in the last report, a big storm cloud is gathering for Nokia. And it's going to be sooner rather than later as visits from Nokia/Symbian (and Blackberry too) are down, while visits from Android are up. This means that right now people are relegating their Nokias and Blackberries to phone calls and texting, whilst using their newer Androids and iPhones to surf the net. My advice to Blackberry: Build an Android phone now. The total sample size above was 15745 visits by humans. Browser Breakup =============== Percentages of visits for the period 1st to 15th June 2011:- IE 47.0 (50.1, 47.8, 49.1, 52.4, 49.5, 48.3, 48.0, 47.2, 48.9) FF 19.7 (19.0, 20.2, 20.5, 19.8, 20.6, 20.9, 22.4, 22.2, 21.1) Safari 14.9 (13.4, 15.4, 15.1, 13.9, 14.5, 14.6, 13.4, 14.2) Chrome 14.3 (13.6, 12.8, 11.7, 10.9, 11.5, 11.5, 10.5, 11.7) Opera 2.2 (2.0, 1.8, 1.8, 1.4, 2.2, 2.3, 2.7, 2.1, 1.7, 2.0) All Others 1.8 (1.8, 1.9, 2.0, 1.8, 1.6, 1.7, 2.3, 3.0, 2.6) Chrome is just behind Safari this fortnight. It's fairly clear that Chrome will pass Safari shortly and the Chrome browser will be greatly boosted if Google's new Chrome O/S is a success. The sample size was 15821 visits by humans. Search Engines Share ==================== Percentage breakup of visits coming via search engines for June 1st to 15th, 2011:- Google 90.3 (91.8, 90.9, 90.5, 89.5, 90.2, 91.4, 90.6, 89.7) Bing 3.5 (3.2, 3.2, 3.4, 4.3, 4.1, 3.5, 3.2, 4.0, 4.3, 3.3, 3.2) Yahoo 3.0 (2.5, 2.8, 3.1, 3.2, 3.1, 2.7, 3.2, 3.4, 3.4, 3.6, 4.1) All others 3.1 (2.5, 3.1, 3.0, 2.9, 2.5, 2.4, 2.8, 2.9, 2.5, 3.3) A "business as usual" sort of result with little to report. Small improvements in the computer programme that decides the browser name has seen about 0.3% shift from Google to Others. The previous high figure for Google at 91.8% looks a little suspect, but these results are little affected by hackers and their kin because they don't make searches. The above results are more influenced by the huge differences between continents, as Bing is hated in Europe and loved in America whilst Yahoo remains popular in some Asian countries. The sample size above was 10598 searches. ================================ ===============================
