Search Engines Share ==================== The latest two figures below are to a slightly revised method, but earlier results have not been corrected. Percentage breakup of visits coming via search engines for June 16th to 30th, 2010:- Google 89.4 (89.7, 89.7, 90.7, 90.5, 90.1, 90.6, 89.1, 90.1, 89.6, 89.5) Yahoo 4.6 (4.3, 3.7, 3.7, 3.8, 4.4, 4.5, 4.9, 4.2, 4.5, 4.8, 5.9, 5.1) Microsoft 2.9 (3.1, 3.6, 3.0, 2.9, 2.7, 2.5, 3.5, 3.0, 3.1, 2.7, 3.0) All others 3.2 (2.9, 2.9, 2.6, 2.8, 2.7, 2.4, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 3.0, 2.9) The sample size above was 9570 searches. Microsoft's Bing has dropped back below the "All others" figure. Search Engines by Country ========================= As presented last month, the differences between continents remains very clear. The method of calculation has been fine-tuned. Essentially the overall result as seen here in Australia can be shown as five quite different distributions added together. Australia/NZ: Google 94%, Yahoo 2% Microsoft 2%, Others 2%. USA/Canada: Google 73%, Yahoo 14%, Microsoft 7% and Others 6%. UK/Ireland: Google 89%, Yahoo 2%, Microsoft 3% and Others 6%. Western Europe: Google 94%, Yahoo 2%, Microsoft 1%, Others 3%. Asia: Google 88% Yahoo 9%, Microsoft minimal, Others 3% If you read the figures for North America (or take your measurements in North America) you could be forgiven for thinking all is swell for Microsoft and Yahoo. In fact Yahoo and Bing are not popular in mainland Europe, and especially Scandinavia where Bing's popularity has taken a dive and is now about 0.7%. Meanwhile in the UK Bing is over 3%. Yahoo is popular in Asia at about 9% but Bing is extremely unpopular at about 0.4%. So unpopular it's almost impossible to measure given the sample sizes. As I was told by email - "the rats are leaving the sinking ship". Just like in Western Europe (excluding the UK), Australian surfers are very pro-Google with the latest result at 94.1% from a sample of 4205 searches. Another Surge of Hits to the Non Smokers' Web Site ================================================== Once again, another massive surge of hits from a chat forum, this time three times larger than the last one at the end of May, and again with some amazing statistics. At 6:49 pm English time on 21th June, someone on a forum at www.tigerdroppings.com linked to the picture of a fat young woman smoking on the Non Smokers' web site at www.nsma.org.au. There were 260 hits in the first 11 minutes, followed by 762 in the next hour, then 440, 284 and 190 hits in the following three hours. Within three days it had tapered off to virtually nothing. In total, there were 3337 hits on 21st, 22nd and 23rd of June, and these hits have been excluded from the figures already presented above. Once again speed of this surge was quite amazing, given the sudden onset and the fast decline. Here is an analysis of the equipment they are using, and their countries. The 3337 hits reduced to 3096 visits, meaning some browsers requested the picture twice. Countries: USA 96%, Canada 1%, Not in database 2% and Rest of world 1%. Operating System: XP 46.9%, Vista 19.1, Windows-7 11.6, Other Windows 0.9, Mac 9.3, Linux 0.3, iPhone 8.8, Other mobiles 2.9%. That's not a misprint, it's iPhones 8.8%. Holy Toledo, Batman. Yes, over 11% visits to this chat forum using mobile phone. The explanation is simple - they have recently unveiled the mobile phone version of their forum. Anyone who is delaying a mobile phone version of their web site because mobiles are only 2% of the market should sit up straight and pay attention. Put simply, those who provide the service that people want get all the traffic. There is a clear preference for the iPhone over the rest of the mobiles. About 10% of "iPhone users" were actually using the new iPad and a similar number were using iPods. A handful were even using the iPhone-4 which had only just been released, selling a million on the first day in America. The figures also imply Androids are the next big thing, after the Blackberry. All the other phone makers are down in the mud, but keep in mind the sample is almost 100% American. Very little from Linux or older versions of Windows. Browser: MSIE 50.6%, Firefox 21.6, Chrome 8.2, Safari 17.2, Opera 0.6 and Others 1.7%. The big Safari figure is just all the iPhones, added to the Macs. In the previous surge of "body builders" there was a strong preference for Firefox and Windows-7. This time it's iPhones. Once again, it this the shape of things to come??? ============================ =============================
